Parting Thoughts

Epitaphs

In the words inscribed on tombstones — which are inevitably brief — we find some of the wittiest and wisest things ever written. It might be a summary of ourselves, a parting word of advice, an obscure message, a warning, or even a joke.

Here's Christopher Wren 's epitaph that has stuck with me throughout the years: If you require a monument, look around.

For context, Wren was buried in the great church he had designed, St. Paul's Cathedral Despite the touch of hubris, there's a lesson to be learned here.

The legacy that we leave - our monument, if you will - is not a big bank account or gleaming marble statue. It's the impact we left on the people and the community to which we belong. So take some time this week and look around at your monument. It's never too late to make some additions.
